What if the best gift of all was already at home? On a piece of paper, lost at the bottom of a drawer. A handwritten love note, a sentence of encouragement written on a post-it note. These little scribbled nothings become treasures once engraved. Because writing is an imprint, proof of existence, the memory of a gesture. Offering a gift personalized with handwriting is to anchor a bond, to perpetuate a memory. Imagine your signed knife, bearing the most beautiful message you’ve ever received. Discover how the magic of emotions turns an engraved object into a fragment of memory.
Why does handwriting create more emotion than printed text?
Giving an object personalized with handwriting transforms the words of a loved one into a unique and memorable gift, beyond the object itself.
As neuroscience proves, handwriting embodies intention and emotion. Studies show that with a pencil, the brain unfolds an idea, a line of reasoning and anchors learning much more firmly than with a keyboard. The moment the person wrote it, the emotion they experienced, their desire to please or encourage… all this remains in the message.
The microvariations of calligraphy, pressure, inclination, rhythm – everything breathes the feelings of the writer. The shape of the letters, the flats, the hollows and the untied, reinforce the emotional attachment to the message.
An engraved handwritten word is a fragment of life made eternal, accessible at any time. After all, to write is to inscribe the body in the word and the gesture in the memory.
Would you rather frame a sentence printed on your computer or that charming little note you found on your bedside table one morning? These intimate words, these fragments of yourself or others, can now be engraved on a keepsake that protects them.
What you can engrave: words of love, a signature, a child’s drawing…
Now you’re convinced. But you’re not sure which word to engrave. Ask yourself these simple questions.
What emotion do you want to trigger? Perhaps, among your old letters and post-its, there’s a phrase you think of regularly. A word that lifts you up and encourages you when life throws you a curve. It’s precisely this type of message that finds its perfect place on a personalized gift.
How do you want to support the person you’re giving this gift to? Retirements, expatriations and long journeys all deserve a word of support on a gift. An object that the recipient keeps in their pocket, like a knife for example 😉.
Because what you’re really offering is the presence, the link that unites the person to the one who wrote the note. Here are some ideas for handwritten message engravings and the effect a simple word triggers.

How do you go from handwriting to a lasting gift?
It’s easy!
Choosing the right knife: follow the application
Of course, it’s obvious. But it’s an essential step.
Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice.
🔪 Men’s knife or women’s knife.
🔪 EDC knife, fixed knife or folding knife.
🔪 Kitchen knife, table knife, chef’s knife or knife for outdoor activities.
🔪 Knife with forged, Damascus or stainless steel blade.
No need to panic. Just ask yourself what use the recipient will make of his or her precious knife. For the rest, listen to your feelings, they’re the best advisors.
And if that’s too difficult, our guide to finding the perfect gift knife will help.
Transmitting your handwritten note couldn’t be easier
Our video tutorial explains it all.
Make sure the phrase to be engraved is legible, preferably written in black and white, ideally in felt-tip pen.
Scan or photograph it, even with your smartphone. Then simply download it.
Click on “personalize my knife”, then “premium engraving”. Upload your file.
Decide where you’d like the phrase to appear, and confirm.
Add a pictogram for even more personalization
Want to anchor the emotion even further? Finish off your personalized knife with a pictogram. Our friend and painter Nicolas Peyron has designed one for every taste and occasion: navy anchor, game, magic square, motorcycle, heart, Morta extraction, Freemason symbol, infinity, wolf, musical note, ocean liner, pin-up, fish, Porsche, rose, skull and crossbones.
And for those who want to personalize their knife with a word typed in the order form, five fonts offer rock’n’roll typography for your message.
We take care of the rest. We reproduce the written word with the same precious care with which we craft our handmade knives: love of a job well done and patience.
If you have the slightest hesitation, write to us (with a computer 😉 ), and we’ll help you achieve the best possible result.
Craftsmanship, emotion, durability: the trifecta of a timeless gift
It’s true, the personalized gift craze has exploded in recent years with the democratization of laser printers. But are you really looking for a mass-produced gift? Does the indelible trace of that precious written word really have to end up on an object that itself will linger at the back of a cupboard among its plastic counterparts?
As craftsmen of art, we at Couteaux Morta are dedicated to :
🔪 bring to life a noble material: Morta ;
🔪 perpetuate ancestral know-how: the cutler’s gesture;
🔪 pass on 5,000 years of history.
Yes, the disposable era is over. Today’s consumers want the sustainable, the short circuit, the made in France, the real thing. Offering a personalized handcrafted gift means adding that responsible, ethical and human touch: the alliance of passionate know-how, noble materials and a gift charged with symbolism.
🔪 By offering a Morta knife, you’re slipping 5,000 years of history into the recipient’s pocket.
🔪✍️ By offering a Morta knife personalized with handwriting, you slip the history of Morta definitively linked to that of its recipient. Pretty chic, don’t you think?
I offer an emotional gift full of history.
Why does giving Morta make a personalized knife memorable?
We were talking about 5,000 years of history. But why?
Because Morta is an oak from the Brière marshes. And the Brière is an old lady, 5 millennia old, which has undergone many geological upheavals.
Several millennia BC. BC, a first oak grove, dating back to the Neolithic period, collapsed and sank into the brown peat. Then, in 950 BC. A second oak forest collapsed, this time trapped in the black peat that had formed in the meantime. Archaeologist Yann Lejeune dates these oaks back 5,000 to 5,500 years.
These trunks, deprived of oxygen, have preserved themselves admirably well. The nutrients in the soil nourished them. Silica gave them their ebony-black color. Alternating black and brown peat added caramel highlights.
Today, the Morta, a local term found in 19th-century literature such as that of Alphonse de Châteaubriant, is the pride of the Briérons. A typical figure steeped in history, it is, along with the extraordinary ecosystem, the richness of the Brière heritage.
We’ve been designing and manufacturing knives with Morta handles for fifteen years now. The Brière region didn’t have its own local knife, so we came up with our own.
When words fade from paper, what remains is the gesture. The gesture of a hand that writes, sometimes trembles, but says what’s essential. Giving a personalized gift in handwriting is more than just giving a present: it’s conveying a raw emotion, a tangible link, a living memory.
Do you have a note to keep, a hand to honor, a message to engrave?
Let the writing do the work. We’ll be there to transform it into an object of memory.
